Organizing Walk-in Closets

May 18th, 2009

“I feel the results were a joy to behold!

I couldn’t be more pleased with Ellen’s organizing of my adjoining walk-in closets. With serious editing of clothes no longer desired, followed by logical rearranging, both closets were given much needed free space. New outfits were created with items long forgotten with newer purchases. I experienced a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction thanks to Ellen’s expertise.”

Organized and Safe in Their Homes

May 17th, 2009

A Labor of Love

I’ve been thinking since Mother’s Day, that there should be a new thought process regarding both of these holidays  honoring our parents.  Along with celebrating these special people, we should consider their safety and independence.  As they reach a more advanced age, care needs to be given as to how they physically move around and live independently.  According to the program, Good Morning America,  (www.GMA.com),  aired on Wednesday, May 13th, 300,000 people fall every year.  One fifth of that number results in death.  The greater percentage of the 300,000 people are senior citizens.  A reminder to all  of us that organization and safety should be uppermost in our thoughts.  Organizing the physical surroundings of our loved ones, with an eye to safety, does not need to be difficult .

  1. Look around with an eye to the potential of a fall.
  2. Concentrate on scatter rugs, bathroom, kitchen, stairwells and bedroom.
  3. Adhere rugs to the floor.
  4. Put up safety bars in the bathtub/shower  and toilet area.
  5. Move food, cooking utensils and dishes in kitchen cabinets to lower shelves and cabinets.
  6. Put up railings on both sides of the stairs and be sure the lighting is bright.
  7. Nightlights in the bedroom, and be certain there is a clear path to the doorway.
  8. Subscribe to a Medic Alert or Lifeline program.

These are just some of the organizational ways to insure safety in the home. Each of these suggestions will enhance the safety and well being of our seniors and those with physical difficulties.

Happy Mothers Day and Fathers Day with a Twist!
